Since its founding in April 2000 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian Top Team (BTT) has emerged as a global icon in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts (MMA). Established by Murilo Bustamante, Ricardo Libório, Mário Sperry, and Luis Roberto Duarte, BTT was born from the Carlson Gracie tradition and quickly became a worldwide reference. These founders, each with an impressive legacy, created BTT with the goal of innovating and raising the standards of Jiu-Jitsu and MMA.
BTT is known for its significant contribution to the sport, producing standout champions who have helped shape the history of martial arts. Notable athletes trained by BTT include Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira and Antônio Rogério Nogueira, also known as the Nogueira Brothers, who are champions in PRIDE and UFC; Vitor Belfort, former UFC champion; and Murilo Bustamante, former UFC champion and PRIDE FC finalist. These fighters exemplify the high level of skill and competitiveness cultivated within BTT, solidifying its position as one of the top MMA and Jiu-Jitsu teams in the world.
The global influence of BTT extended beyond Brazil’s borders. Its reputation and legacy inspired many around the world, including Edgard Dutra. Captivated by BTT’s excellence and impact on the martial arts world, Edgard, a dedicated black belt, felt a deep connection with BTT’s philosophy and principles. Driven by a desire to share this passion and expand the influence of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Edgard decided to bring BTT’s legacy to new horizons.
In 2005, Edgard Dutra realized this dream by opening Brazilian Top Team Melbourne, the first BTT affiliate in Florida. This move not only introduced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the region but also marked the beginning of a new era for the martial art in the state. Under Edgard’s leadership, BTT Melbourne quickly became a center of excellence, offering world-class training while maintaining the high standards BTT is known for globally.
BTT Melbourne is not only a pioneer in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Florida but also a beacon of quality and innovation. Since its opening, the academy has attracted students of all levels, providing a welcoming environment and programs tailored for beginners and elite athletes alike. The commitment to excellence is evident in every aspect of training, reflecting BTT’s global legacy.
In addition to its commitment to training excellence, BTT Melbourne has a significant impact on the local community. In collaboration with Edgard Dutra, the academy has established partnerships with local institutions, offering training and promoting exchanges with police, military, and other organizations. These initiatives not only contribute to the personal and professional development of participants but also strengthen ties with the community.
The trainers at BTT Melbourne, all experienced and champions in their respective fields, bring a wealth of knowledge to the academy. Through advanced techniques and a curriculum focused on personal development, we ensure that every member receives the support needed to achieve their goals, whether in competition or personal growth.
BTT Melbourne’s presence in the competition scene is noteworthy, with our students earning medals in local and international tournaments, such as the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship and ADCC. The academy is also recognized for its strong community, which Edgard Dutra has helped build over the years. Our programs are designed to foster camaraderie and personal growth, offering more than just training — we offer a transformative experience.
